Confederation of American Associations for the Production of Sustainable Agriculture Welcome! This web site presents a Proposal for a Sustainable Agriculture by FARMERS FROM THE AMERICAS. This historic proposal was originally drafted in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992, a moment when the institutions of humankind were debating how to develop themselves in the future. This proposal is by FARMERS OF THE AMERICAS, who are deeply concerned about the CONTINUOUS AND SEVERE DETERIORATION of soils in particular, and the environment in general. They are also concerned about maintaining their income, and for the technical-economic possibility of the survival of their explorations, as gears of the sensible WORLD FOOD PRODUCTION MACHINERY. Proposal Goals and Requirements. These American Farmers wish to apply a scheme of Agropecuary Production which in an unconditional manner: (a) Should be able to maintain and even to improve the environment and natural resources. (b) Must respect the ecological equilibrium. (c) Should be technically applicable and easy to implement on a farming production basis. (d) Should be profitable to those farmers who apply it in the short term, and should have the capability of maintaining or improving its profitability in the long term. (e) Should be capable of having a fast and wide dissemination. Consequently, this scheme will become the basic tool of sustainable agriculture.
